About Forklifts

Forklift BestUsed Equipment.com

Forklifts are indispensable machines in a wide range of industries, including construction, warehousing, shipping, manufacturing, and many more. They are designed to lift, move, and load or unload heavy objects, with some models capable of handling loads up to 35,000 pounds (15,875 kilograms) or more. With the addition of various attachments such as clamps, fork extensions, augers, grapplers, hammers, and rotators, forklifts can be adapted to perform numerous specialized tasks.

A Brief History of Forklifts

The evolution of forklifts dates back to the early 1900s, with pioneering companies like the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and the Clark Company developing early battery-powered and internal combustion-powered trucks. Modern forklifts are categorized into two main types: mast forklifts, which use a front assembly to lift loads, and telescopic forklifts, which feature a boom for lifting. Additionally, forklifts can be classified based on their ability to navigate rough terrain, their tire types, and their specific applications, such as side-loading or reach capabilities.

Types of Forklifts

    • Cushion Tire Forklifts: Ideal for indoor applications and smooth surfaces, cushion tire forklifts feature solid rubber tires attached to metal rims. These forklifts are generally smaller and more maneuverable, making them perfect for tight spaces, such as warehouse aisles and around pallets. They are commonly used in warehouses, factories, and manufacturing facilities.
    • Pneumatic Tire Forklifts: Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, pneumatic tire forklifts have higher ground clearance and wider tires. These tires, made from solid rubber or filled with compressed air, can handle rough terrain and obstacles like nails or rocks. Pneumatic tire forklifts are popular in lumberyards, construction sites, agriculture, airports, and other industries requiring robust machinery.

    • Order Pickers: These forklifts are specialized for use in warehouses, distribution centers, and retail storage areas. Unlike traditional forklifts, order pickers allow operators to ride on an elevated platform along with the forks, providing enhanced visibility and the ability to pick individual items from shelves.

    • Stand-Up & Reach Forklifts: While both stand-up and reach forklifts are versatile, reach trucks are specifically designed for moving pallets in warehouse environments. Stand-up forklifts are often used for loading and unloading trucks and trailers. The distinguishing feature of reach forklifts is their telescopic or scissor mechanism, enabling them to lift loads from higher and farther distances.

    • Truck-Mounted Forklifts: These forklifts are designed for quick mounting and unmounting on trucks or trailers, making them ideal for time-sensitive tasks like delivering materials. Common applications include beverage distribution, construction, agriculture, and lifting building materials. Most truck-mounted forklifts are diesel-powered and come with either three or four wheels.

    • Rough Terrain Forklifts: Also known as “all-terrain forklifts,” these machines are built to handle uneven outdoor surfaces. They feature large pneumatic tires for high ground clearance and are available with masts or telescopic booms for extended reach. Four-wheel-drive options are available for enhanced traction on challenging terrain.
